Make your LLMs ready to hand

Authors

This post is a rough draft. Better version coming soon.

Your LLMs should be within easy reach (i.e. a single keyboard shortcut, and on your mobile home screen).

If you mostly use Claude, the 80:20 is: download the desktop app.

My personal setup:

  1. Download a web browser you don't use by default (e.g. Edge).
  2. Open that browser and add your favourite LLMs to the bookmarks toolbar.
  3. Configure a keyboard shortcut to switch to that browser.
  4. (Optionally) Make each new window of that browser open all items in your bookmarks toolbar, so all the LLMs are open right away each time you do CMD+N to make a new window.

I love this flow, but the setup time is ~10 mins. I’m seeking an easier option.

Why do this, instead of using the desktop apps?

  • In ChatGPT desktop, you can't add Google Docs.
  • I use BetterChat to add keyboard shortcuts to ChatGPT and Claude (e.g. CTRL+G to add a Google Doc).
  • I use many LLMs, including Gemini and Grok. They don't have desktop apps.

The desktop apps do have some extra features though (e.g. view your screen; record calls). So I'm a bit torn.

Tips:

(i) Use Edge, Brave or another Chromium browser. Do not use Firefox or Safari, because your favourite browser extensions may be unavailable.

(ii) Configure shortcuts using this method.

(iii) By default, Edge and Brave have some useless "additional" features enabled by default (e.g. AI chat sidebar, crypto stuff, news articles on the new tab screen). Switch them off in the browser settings.
